Privacy policy
Last updated: 30 September 2026
The short version: your Timeline file never leaves your device. The site uses cookie-free analytics to count visits, and may show ads from Google, which do use cookies. Details below.
Who we are
There I Went (thereiwent.com) is run by Helmut Eder, Australia. For anything about privacy, email info@thereiwent.com.
Your Timeline file
When you open a Google Maps Timeline export (or a Google Takeout file) in There I Went, it is read and processed entirely by code running in your own browser. The file is not uploaded to us or to anyone else, and we never receive it or anything calculated from it. Nothing from it is stored after you close the tab. Images, spreadsheets and map files are only saved when you choose to save them, and then only to your own device. A downloaded map file contains your places and works offline; its links to Wikipedia or Google Maps only open if you click them, and then send only that place's name or coordinates. We don't pass your file or your results to advertisers or analytics providers.
Analytics
We use Cloudflare Web Analytics to understand how the site is used: pages viewed, where visitors came from, browser and device type, country, and page speed. It does not use cookies, does not track you across other websites, and reports only aggregated figures to us. See Cloudflare's privacy policy.
Hosting and security
The site is hosted by Cloudflare. Like any web host, Cloudflare processes technical information such as your IP address and browser details in order to deliver pages and protect the site from attacks. This is handled under Cloudflare's privacy policy, linked above.
Advertising
We may show ads provided by Google AdSense. Google and its partners use cookies to show ads, including ads based on your previous visits to this and other websites. You can turn off personalised advertising in Google's Ad Settings, and learn more in how Google uses information from sites that use its services. Visitors in the European Economic Area, the UK and Switzerland are asked for consent before personalised ads are shown, and can change their choice at any time.
If you email us, we use your address and message only to reply and to help with your question. Our email is provided by Zoho.
Children
There I Went is not directed at children under 16, and we don't knowingly collect information from them.
Your rights
Because your Timeline stays on your device, we hold very little about you: at most, emails you've sent us. You can ask us to show, correct or delete anything we hold by emailing info@thereiwent.com. You also have the right to complain to a privacy regulator, such as the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner or the data protection authority where you live.
International transfers
Cloudflare, Google and Zoho operate internationally, so information handled by them may be processed outside your country, under their own safeguards.
Changes
If this policy changes, we'll update the date at the top of this page.
