How to see your Google Maps Timeline on a computer, laptop or PC

The short answer: Google no longer offers Timeline on the web. To see it on a big screen, export the Timeline file from your phone and open it in a viewer that runs in your browser. Here's how, step by step.

What changed

For years, Timeline (formerly Location History) was stored in your Google Account, and you could browse it on a computer. Over 2024 and 2025, Google moved it onto people's phones: history is now stored on the device itself, the web version was switched off, and each phone keeps its own copy. That's better for privacy, but it means the only built-in way to look at your history is on your phone, one day at a time.

Step 1: export your Timeline from your phone

On Android it's in your phone's Settings under Location → Location services → Timeline → Export Timeline data. On iPhone it's in Google Maps under your profile picture → Settings → Personal content → Export Timeline data. The full export guide covers both in detail, plus older Takeout history.

Step 2: get the file onto your computer

Email it to yourself, put it in Google Drive, iCloud Drive or Dropbox, or AirDrop it to a Mac. The file is called Timeline.json on Android and location-history.json on iPhone.

Step 3: open it in There I Went

  1. Go to thereiwent.com.
  2. Click Make mine (or drag the file onto the page) and choose your export.
  3. After a short reveal, you'll see the history from your file on a world map, with the countries and cities you visited, kilometres by type of travel, nights away from home, a table of days per country, and a card you can save or share.
  4. Use the timeline bar or the date buttons to look at any stretch of time: one trip, one year, or everything.

Is it private?

Yes. There I Went reads the file inside your browser; it isn't uploaded to any server, and nothing is kept after you close the tab. You can check this yourself: once the page has loaded, switch off your internet connection and it still works. The privacy policy has the details.
